What is Psyllium Husk Fiber?
Psyllium husks fiber can be found in the seed covering of the plant called Plantago Psyllium L. Traditionally, it was used by Indians and Arab for stomach upset and constipation. It came to be known into the United States decades ago to be used for constipation relief.
Today, the use of this Psyllium husk soluble fiber is not limited to digestive malfunctions. It has been discovered that it can prevent cancer and cardiac-related health problems. It is available in powder form or in capsules. For Psyllium husk fiber diet, it can be eaten in the form of bars and wafers.
What are the benefits of Psyllium Husk Fiber?
- · Reduces Bad Cholesterol
The bad cholesterol otherwise known as Low Density Lipids (LDL), which clogs the veins and arteries is decreased. The good cholesterol or the High Density Lipid (HDL) is not greatly affected, which is good for the body. However, for those who have abnormally high LDL must check with their doctors for other remedies. A daily intake of 5 grams, twice a day of seed husk is the dosage being recommended.
- · Relieves Constipation
More known as a laxative. Psyllium husk soluble fiber increases the bulk and volume in the gastro-intestinal tract. However, you must drink lots of fluids when using Psyllium to avoid blockage. A tablespoon per glass of water a day is the recommended dosage.

Anal fissures or anal cuts are due to abnormal bowel eliminations such as constipation, diarrhea, and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Since Psyllium brings back the normal elimination process of the body, the fissures are lessened. However, studies have not yet proven whether Psyllium aids in the healing process.

Since Psyllium husk fiber helps in making the stool to be easily secreted, there is less resistance, which gives time for the swollen and inflamed anal veins to recover. Proper dosage however is encouraged to avoid complications.

Psyllium husk diet has been found effective for weight loss. The Psyllium is like a sponge that makes someone on a weight loss program feel full. This diet is taken before a regular meal. It is advised to drink lots of water to avoid digestive tract blockage.
What should be considered in taking Psyllium husk fiber?
- · Those who have undergone digestive tract surgery such as ileostomy, colostomy cannot take Psyllium husk fiber. Moreover, if you have intestinal obstructions, abdominal hernia, or any gastrointestinal tract disorders, Psyllium husk fiber diet is not encouraged.
- · Diabetics should first check with their doctor before undergoing Psyllium husk fiber intake.
- · Do not take Psyllium if you have Psyllium husk allergy can result to rashes and difficulty of breathing.
- · If you are taking other drugs, it is wise to consult your doctor first because it may increase of reduce the effects of such drugs.
- · Those with bone defects cannot use this fiber on their diet as it can reduce calcium absorption as well as magnesium, iron, zinc, and vitamin B12.
- · Psyllium supplements are normally taken for a week unless prescribed by your doctor. The correct dosage and proper preparation should always be followed to avoid complications.
