Already Bad Health Situation in Haiti Has Gotten Worse – It’s Aftershock

For years Haiti has had to deal with inferior medical care and various health concerns. The earthquake that has recently impacted the country has made conditions worse for the country and is likely to end up causing a new series of medical concerns. These concerns are ones that could end up killing hundreds of thousands of people who didn’t die right after the earthquake.
Before the earthquake health conditions in Haiti were very poor. A lack of water supplies and ongoing violence around the country has plagued the area for years. A lack of fuel to help with getting generators to work for mobile hospitals around the country has hurt as well. Various outbreaks have been caused as a result of these problems including an outbreak of typhoid in 2003. The earthquake has essentially worked to impair the ability of the country to work with appropriate medical facilities because of how electricity and proper transportation methods have practically been lost.
However power has gone out throughout much of Haiti. Many buildings that were home to hospitals around Haiti have been destroyed or damaged to the point where it will be impossible for various important medical treatments to be handled. With this in mind it will be difficult to treat people who have suffered from massive traumas in the earthquake or to take care of wounds that could end up becoming infected.
Today there are only two public hospitals in Haiti, particularly in the Port-au-Prince area, that are still standing according to the Doctors Without Borders organization. With a majority of people in Haiti being below the poverty line and not being able to afford medical treatments through private hospitals these are the only places that people can really go to for their medical needs at this time. With so many injuries coming from the earthquake it is unlikely that all people in Haiti will be able to have their injuries treated.
The water around Haiti has become very dangerous to people. There is hardly any water for people to drink and the water that is available has become tainted with human waste and various intestinal worms that can cause various diseases including anemia. The lack of prior support for water sanitation due to people not sticking around to work here due to poor salaries has become very evident here. People who consume the water can also develop dysentery and cholera.
HIV infection is something to watch for as well. The increase in human waste and the lack of an ability to clean off surfaces that have been stained with blood has increased the likelihood of HIV being able to spread to others in the area. This has made it important for people traveling to Haiti to work with treating people impacted by the earthquake to wear proper protective materials when going around the area in order to avoid becoming infected.
The health situation in Haiti has become especially difficult as a result of the recent earthquake. There are fewer hospitals available and it has become difficult to get from one place to another for medical needs. The water has also become dangerous in the area.
