A recent photo exhibition in New York’s Grant Central terminal gave people a better understanding of the challenges that people suffering from Multiple sclerosis have to face in life. This exhibition was created for the purpose of making people aware of such diseases and allows them to seek medical advice and treatment in time to avoid further complications.
Multiple sclerosis has a very wide range of symptoms and they go from fatigue to vision problems to numbness and stiffness, dizziness and loss of bladder control and problems with speech. There are 27 people participating in this exhibition and it is planned to travel around the country to bring the awareness to the people who need them the most.
One of the participants is a 48 years old nurse who is also a mother and a wife and who was all of a sudden unable to move from her bed one day. She became a patient and after many exams and tests, she was finally diagnosed with Multiple sclerosis. Proper treatment of this disease will keep you mobile; however, early detection is very difficult as the symptoms vary from person to person.
Since a total cure for multiple sclerosis is not available yet, the medical community is trying to encourage people to be very aware of the initial symptoms and for them to take these seriously and consult a doctor at the earliest. Treating the disease at the beginning helps keep in check.
The exhibition is being sponsored by Berlex Inc, the marketers of Betaseron, which is a medicine for the treatment of Multiple sclerosis in the relapsing form. This medicine was introduced in 1993 and it has proved to be a very good in alleviating some of the symptoms related to the disease, however, there is no permanent cure for this chronic condition.
The side effects of Betaseron include lymphopenia, asthenia, flu symptoms, headaches and body pains.
Learning and understanding the symptoms and causes of Multiple sclerosis can play a very important role if you are a person prone to this disease. The causes of Multiple sclerosis are not known yet, however, this is becoming a very common disease all over the world and it can be easily related to some chemical or environmental reaction in our immune system.
There is a lot to be done still to create more awareness in these specific areas, however, the present efforts by those who are suffering from these diseases are very encouraging and worth praising.
