What are the causes of enlarged prostrate

prostate cancer What are the causes of enlarged prostrate

Enlarged prostate is one of the very common diseases that affect men in their late 60’s and early 70’s all over the world. The most common symptom of enlarged prostate is the need to urinate on very regular basis. This disease is also known as benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH.

However, although this disease is so common and it has been diagnosed and treated so many times, medical science has not been able to find the causes for this disease.

Normally, it has been seen that enlarged prostrate runs in the family, therefore it can be considered to be a hereditary disease. There is the possibility that growth cells which are responsible for the growth of the prostate get the wrong signals at later stages in life and create this problem. It has also been found that men that have had a surgery to remove their testes for some reason or the other normally do not suffer from enlarged prostrate.

Therefore, we can come to the conclusion that the tested definitely play an important role in the enlargement of the prostrate. Also, men produce testosterone and estrogen throughout life. However, with age the testosterone begins to decrease its production where as estrogen does not. Some research conducted on animals has revealed that this process may trigger the production of growth hormones which will create the enlargement of the prostrate as well. However, although the theory can be very strong, there is no evidence to make it a fact as yet.

Another study conducted also mentions that dihydrotestosterone also plays a very important role in the development of many of the male growth from the time of pregnancy itself. This hormone is directly related to the facial hair, changes in the voice and growth of the prostrate.

With age, men tend to have decreased levels of testosterone, however, the hormone DHT does not seem to stop its production and this hormone is located on the prostrate itself. Men suffering from low DHT levels don’t normally have enlarged prostate problems.

There is no evidence found in the many studies conducted to prove any of these theories, however, it seems to be clear that the enlarged prostrate problem is due to an unbalance in the hormonal system which happens with age.

  1. Lucio Austin says:

My father is saying that enlarged prostrate that leads to cancer is due to build-up of semen not released. Therefore, he believes that inactive men suffer from the illness. Is this true?
