Crohn’s disease is the inflammation of the colon. This painful disease is normally treated with drugs like sulfasalazine, mesalamine, glucocorticoids and mercaptopurine. Other antibiotics normally used are Ciprofloxacin and Metronidazole. It is very common for patients to experience abdominal pains and weight loss due to the inability to digest food properly.
The actual causes of Crohn’s disease are not known yet, however, it is believed that overeating, and chemical poisoning can cause the immune system to over react and the disease sets in. this disease is sometimes confused with ileitis, which is also an inflammatory disease of the digestive track. The symptoms also include diarrhea with pain, blood and mucus discharge and pus from the infection. The difference between the two diseases is that Crohn’s disease can affect any part of the digestive track and not just the intestines. Also, the symptoms of Crohn’s disease come and go and this is not the case with ileitis, where the problems are constant.
In fact, one of the problems of Crohn’s disease is that patients experience periods when they believe that they are totally cured, when actually the inflammation is taking a break and then it freaks up all over again.
Surgery is an option that your doctor may contemplate to treat Crohn’s disease and the procedure is not dangerous to your system. Crohn’s disease can change the skin conditions of your digestive track and it can thicken the skin as well. Also, there are many cases of people suffering from liver problems due to this disease. People with family history of Crohn’s disease may also suffer from hives and asthma. Other problems related to this disease can include enlargement of the fingers, lesions in the eyes and arthritis.
There is a lot of studies being conducted on the causes of the disease and ways of handling the treatment and cure, however, there is no effective cure found yet. Although this is a disease that can be handled with medications, it does sometimes interfere with normal life in many ways.
Some of the medicines prescribed for Crohn’s disease can affect other parts of the system in a negative manner. There are many foods that need to be avoided at all times by person’s suffering from Crohn’s disease that need to be remembered, like sugars of any kind, as these contain chemicals that do not help the intestinal bacteria and which will help in the inflammation process. Dairy products are also not recommended.
Crohn’s disease is a chronic ailment that needs to be taken care of in regular basis for you to be able to have a normal lifestyle, and therefore, it is very important to follow the recommendations of your doctor as best as you can.
