Periodontitis or gingivitis is a very common gum disease that affects adults especially after the age of 50 years. The symptoms of gingivitis include swollen and painful gums, tenderness while chewing food, bad taste in the mouth and infections around the teeth. It is very common to find blood on your toothbrush when you are suffering from gingivitis.
Further symptoms will cause for the infection to spread to the bones and it can affect the teeth because of the severe infection. Treatment of gingivitis is very simple if done in time and you should not allow the disease to develop into a more chronic condition.
The easiest way to prevent the appearance of gingivitis is to keep a good dental hygiene at all times. Make sure that you floss your teeth regularly to avoid tartar deposits in between the teeth which become infested with time.
The easiest way of handling gingivitis once it starts to appear is to treat the gums in the proper manner with medications, cleaning of the teeth and keeping general hygiene.
Medical treatments include the utilization of treating the infection with scaling, and antibiotics that are applied directly to the affected areas, and then allowing it to go into the area gradually. Then it is further treated with laser light applied with an optic probe. This is a new and powerful way of treating this disease in a more safe and secure manner.
This treatment was developed by Professor Michael Wilson of the Eastman Dental Institute of London in the UK.
