Lymphoma is a condition which is characterized by reed Sternberg cells. This disease is easily seen in people over 50 years of age and it is not really painful, however the other symptoms that accompany the disease can be very problematic in the long run. There are two basic stages of the disease, and one comes between the age of 16 and 35 years and the other will come in the early 50’s.
Other symptoms that accompany Lymphoma include weight loss and fatigue, skin conditions like itchiness and fevers, and night sweats. However, these are very common symptoms of many diseases and it is very difficult to relate them to Lymphoma or Hodgkin’s disease unless you do a biopsy or a blood test to determine the lumps and where are they situated in the body.
There is another condition which is called non Hodgkin’s lymphoma which affects 5 percent of cancer victims and therefore it is very important to understand the difference. These kinds of lumps not only happen in the neck area, they are also common in the under arms and in the groin area. Besides the itchiness in the skin, people suffering from non Hodgkin’s lymphoma will have red patches in their skin.
Non Hodgkin’s lymphoma can be found with tests using x-rays, MRI’s and CT scans as well. A lymph angiogram will give you better understanding of the lymphatic system in a very systematic manner. A dye is injected to differentiate the nodes and the vessels and you can easily see the difference in the process. The reasons for which you need to follow these tests are because the symptoms are not very clear and you need to make sure that you have the proper diagnosis in time to avoid further complications in case the lump is cancerous.
However, the good news is that people who suffer from Hodgkin’s disease are 90 percent more apt to getting cured from this disease completely. This is considered to be one of the most curable cancers. Once the disease is established, in its early stages, then medications along with chemotherapy or radiation therapy can be given to the patient and it has been found that people suffering from these types of cancers can live without any problems for a long time after they have been given proper treatments.
