DVT or deep vein thrombosis is a blood clot that develops in the veins of a person’s legs and pelvic area and sometimes in rare cases you can also see it in the arms as well. This condition is common among people and there are about 2 million people in the US alone that suffer from this condition. As long as the clot remains in one place there is no harm in the condition, however, if for some reason this clot detaches itself and starts travelling through the circulatory system, this can create life threatening consequences and the patient can lose his life within a very short span of time.
People with a history of DVT are at risk of getting the disease themselves. Also, if you have undergone a very long surgery, or if you have had a complicated pregnancy, the use of birth control pills can also cause DVT. Hormone therapies also play an important role in the circulatory system and they can cause DVT and spinal cord and other back injuries can also cause this problem.
Also, long distance travelling on regular basis can cause DVT; smoking is another factor that needs to be taken into consideration seriously, as smoking affects the circulatory system directly, and so is obesity.
The symptoms of DVT include swelling of the legs, pain and tenderness. The skin on the affected area may appeal to be warm to the touch and the color of the skin changes from the normal to a more bluish tint. The basic problem however with DVT is that it does not give you any symptoms at the beginning of the problem and the symptoms that you actually see can come very gradually, after the condition has already established itself in the system.
Pulmonary embolism happens very fast and the patient needs urgent medical attention. The symptoms of embolism will include shortness of breath, chest pains, anxiety, and rapid pulse coughing and sweating. The fastest medication for this condition is blood coagulants such as Coumadin, heparin or its deratives which help the body clear the clot and prevent Pulmonary Embolism.
Blood clots are very dangerous to your system and they can create conditions that you do not need to experience. Medical practitioners’ advice for you to try and prevent these conditions by keeping a very healthy and active lifestyle that will allow you to avoid any kinds of complications with conditions like DVT in your life.
