Schizophrenia is a mental disorder that affects the ability to recognize between the real and unreal facts of life. The most common symptom of schizophrenia is auditory hallucinations. This disorder is said to affect the cognition, however there are other factors that are being studied which include the capacity of the disorder to affect the behavior and emotions of the patient as well.
A diagnosis of schizophrenia is done by a psychiatrist or a clinical psychologist after understanding the problems and symptoms of the patient and taking proper tests of the normal functions of the body. Schizophrenia is considered to be a mental disorder and therefore there is no biological tests conducted to find any kind of differences in the physical level of the patient, although there is a lot of research that suggests that genetic aspects may have a lot to do with the disease itself and also environmental and social issues can play a very important role in the outcome of this disorder.
Research into the different possibilities of schizophrenia is always been done on the neurobiological factors involved, however, since there is no lab test done to clarify or to confirm a diagnosis of something like schizophrenia, it becomes extremely difficult to answer many questions related to this condition and the medical fraternity is always in a debate as to whether this should be considered a disease or not.
Schizophrenia is a Greek word that literally means divided mind or shattered mind. However, this disorder is different from the multiple personality disorder or split personality disorder where the patient can easily become someone else for some time. However, sometimes these two disorders get confused by people. And although a person suffering from schizophrenia will have problems coping with everyday normal life, there is no aggressive behavior related to this disorder.
A person suffering from schizophrenia will normally have other symptoms which will include depression, anxiety and social problems. Drug abuse can also be a very common problem that schizophrenia patients will have and the rate of these cases is as high as 40 percent. Also, the life expectancy of people with this disorder is decreased to a large extent.
There is a large amount of people that suffer from schizophrenia and that are being treated very successfully and that are able to cope with life very well. As long as these people have certain understanding of the implications and try to keep themselves involved in all aspects of normal life and healthy lifestyle, these is hope for these patients to enjoy life to its fullest.
However, if the disease has not been diagnosed or the patient is having other complications like drug addiction or depression, then this can be very dangerous, as the life expectancy can be cut down to at least 10 to 12 years due to other health problems and due to suicidal cases. It is very important for schizophrenia patients to take proper medications prescribed by the doctors on very regular basis.
