Parkinson’s disease is a neurodegenerative disease that affects the substantia nigra. This disease was discovered by Dr. James Parkinson and hence its name. However, it was only in the 1960’s that medical science was able to get more information on the causes and symptoms of Parkinson’s disease and that it could start to work on methods to help alleviate this problem.
The extra pyramidal system is responsible for the control and communication system between the brain and the body and this is a very huge work. Problems in the extra pyramidal system are all considered a part of Parkinson’s disease. A Parkinson’s disease patient will usually be suffering from depression and other sensory disturbances in the brain due to the damage as well.
This is a disease that affects approximately one in 600 hundred people in the United States alone and it is most common between the ages of 55 to 65 years. The causes of this disease are unknown; however there are some genes that have been found that help understand the depth of the disease.
Although family history does not really play an important role in the development of Parkinson’s disease, there are some cases that have been found to have some hereditary background. The reasons for this degeneration are unknown, however it is believed that the system reacts to certain toxins and chemicals that is incapable of processing and therefore, it loses its ability to cope with this situations and the system begins to degenerate. Strong pesticides and industrial metals could be one of the major causes of these kinds of diseases, however, it is very unclear as to why these chemicals affect some in such a drastic manner and why does it not affect others at all.
There are many factors that need to be taken into consideration in regards to Parkinson’s disease and the medical fraternity is busy trying to understand its causes and I trying to find a solution to the problem. So far there is no cure to Parkinson’s disease, however, the only thing that one can do to try and avoid these kinds of situations is to try and live a very healthy lifestyle which will give a strong immune system and it will help to strengthen your system especially in old age.
A patient of Parkinson’s disease has problems coordinating body movements, may have tremors on permanent basis and it can find it very difficult to come with small day to day tasks in the long run and it will require constant attention. Some patients also suffer from temporary memory loss and will totally forget their friends and families. These symptoms vary from case to case and will become more acute with the progression of the disease.
