Lower left abdominal pain is common in children and in most cases the pain is harmless. At times the left side abdominal pain in younger age group can be a sign of some more serious ailment. There can be several reasons for lower left sided abdominal pain like:-

  • Gastroenteritis:
It can be a cause for left sided pain in children as it is caused by the entry of a virus in the intestinal tract. It can also cause fever, diarrhea and vomiting in severe cases.
  • Cosnstipation:
If children are having constipation it can easily lead to pain in the left side of the abdomen. It is seen in children having irregular bowel movements. This condition is not accompanied by symptoms as vomiting and diarrhea.
  • Trauma:
Knowing the playful nature and activities of children, trauma is very often a reason for left sided abdominal pain. If a child is hit in the stomach or has got hurt by the impact of some source, it can raise an acute pain in the abdomen.
  • Ovarian Torsion:
Young girls having ovarian torsion can experience pain in the left side of their abdomens. Such a condition arises when the blood is only going into the ovary but not able to come out of it.
  • Testicular Torsion:
Males of adolescent age group suffering with abdominal pain in the left side may have torsion in testicles. This is due to reduced blood supply in the testicle leading to their swelling and pain in them.
  • Urinary Tract Infection:
Children especially girls are also vulnerable to have abdominal pain because of urinary tract infection. It can be diagnosed if there are symptoms like pain in abdomen with fever and pain with urination.

Though it is not necessary for all children but certain tests can help to find out the reason of lower abdominal pain like plain X ray (KUB), abdominal and/or pelvic ultrasound or CT Scan, stool test for blood and stool cultures for tracing parasites and bacteria of various other disorders or diseases.
